It’s Superman!

Superman_CD

Superman is not only able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but he has served as a source of inspiration to musicians (and little boys with capes) for decades. In some of these songs he has qualities to be emulated, but he can also be a source of frustration and even pity for others. It’s not always easy to be the “man of steel”…

It’s Superman!:

  • The Adventures of Superman (TV theme) – Leion Klatzkin
  • Superman – R.E.M.
  • Superman Inside – Eric Clapton
  • Dolly Dagger – Jimi Hendrix
  • Superman – Lazlo Bane
  • You Don’t Mess Around With Jim – Jim Croce
  • Keep It Simple – Keb’ Mo’
  • Superman Lover – Johnny “Guitar” Watson
  • Sunshine Superman – Rickie Lee Jones
  • That’s Really Super, Supergirl – XTC
  • Where Are You Going? – Dave Matthews Band
  • Kryptonite – 3 Doors Down
  • Jimmy Olsen’s Blues – Spin Doctors
  • Resignation Superman – Big Head Todd & The Monsters
  • Superman – Five for Fighting
  • Save Me – Aimee Mann
  • 83 – John Mayer
  • Glamour Profession – Steely Dan
  • (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman – The Kinks

Psycho Killers

Psycho_Killers-2

Not to glorify pyscho killers or anything, but it’s a subject that seems to fascinate songwriters as much as their literary counterparts. Some of these songs are about “psychos,” some are about “killers” and some are about both. Make sure to listen when you’re safely inside with the doors locked.

Psycho Killers:

  • Psycho Killer – Talking Heads
  • Woke Up This Morning (Chosen One Mix) – A3
  • Don’t Take Me Alive – Steely Dan
  • Intruder – Peter Gabriel
  • Murder by Numbers – The Police
  • I Scare Myself – Thomas Dolby
  • Riders on the Storm – The Doors
  • State Trooper – Bruce Springsteen
  • The Beast In Me – Nick Lowe
  • The Ballad of Hollis Brown – The Neville Brothers
  • I Shot the Sheriff – Bob Marley & The Wailers
  • Hey Joe – Jimi Hendrix
  • That’s Killer Joe – The Manhattan Transfer
  • Mack the Knife – Ella Fitzgerald
  • Maxwell’s Silver Hammer – The Beatles
  • Miss Otis Regrets – Kirsty MacColl + The Pogues
  • Folsom Prison Blues – Johnny Cash

Cello Songs

Cello-Songs-2

There’s something about adding a cello to a song that, when it’s done right, provides a great deal of depth and even mystery to a song. The Beatles, and George Martin, helped set the standard with their string quartet arrangements on songs like Yesterday and Eleanor Rigby. I’m not even sure that all of these songs feature the cello, but they sure sound like it to me.

Cello Songs:

  • Cello Song – Nick Drake
  • As You Said – Cream
  • Disarm – Smashing Pumpkins
  • Never Stop – Echo & The Bunnymen
  • Kashmir – Led Zeppelin
  • The Shining – Badly Drawn Boy
  • Without Her – Harry Nilsson
  • Sonata for Cello and Piano – Mutato Muzika Orchestra
  • Angel of the Morning – Pretenders
  • I’ll Keep It With Mine – Nico
  • As Tears Go By – The Rolling Stones
  • Eleanor Rigby – The Beatles (Strings Only)
  • Purple Haze – Kronos String Quartet
  • Steel City Strut – Turtle Island String Quartet
  • My Cello – Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks
  • Never the Same – Supreme Beings of Leisure

Gringo Rock

Gringo-Rock-2

I always find it interesting to hear how one genre of music can influence artists of entirely different styles. While I really enjoy groups such as Los Lobos and Santana, I also get a kick out of hearing how artists such as The Doors or Talking Heads incorporate Latin rhythms into their own music.

Gringo Rock:

  • In These Shoes? – Kirsty MacColl
  • Cancer – Joe Jackson
  • Tropicalia – Beck
  • Mr. Jones – Talking Heads
  • Born at the Right Time – Paul Simon
  • El Macho – Mark Knopfler
  • Can’t You Hear Me Knocking – Rolling Stones
  • Living in the Past – Jethro Tull
  • Caramel – Suzanne Vega
  • And I Love Her – The Beatles
  • Spanish Caravan – The Doors
  • Samba Triste – Stan Getz
  • Tango to Evora – Loreena McKennitt
  • Spill the Wine – Eric Burdon & War
  • Do It Again – Steely Dan

Beatles Undercover

Beatles_Undercover_Cover-2

We’ve developed a tradition in our family of exchanging music mixes every Christmas. I always like my mixes to have a “theme” and enjoy designing the covers almost as much as coming up with the playlists themselves. The first one I did was back in 2000 and, of course, was a collection of Beatles covers. I am including a link to a video playlist so you can hear, and in some cases see, the music.

 The Beatles Undercover:

  • She Came In Through the Bathroom Window – Joe Cocker
  • Taxman – Stevie Ray Vaughan
  • Soldier of Love – Marshall Crenshaw
  • You Can’t Do That – Harry Nilsson
  • Eleanor Rigby – Stanley Jordan
  • She’s A Woman – Jeff Beck
  • Drive My Car – Bobby McFerrin
  • Helter Skelter – The Bobs
  • Come Together – Michael Hedges
  • Blackbird – Crosby, Stills & Nash
  • Across the Universe – Fiona Apple
  • I’ve Just Seen a Face – Holly Cole
  • Dear Prudence – Siouxsie & the Banshees
  • For No One – Rickie Lee Jones
  • Because – Elliott Smith
