Gringo-Rock-2

I always find it interesting to hear how one genre of music can influence artists of entirely different styles. While I really enjoy groups such as Los Lobos and Santana, I also get a kick out of hearing how artists such as The Doors or Talking Heads incorporate Latin rhythms into their own music.

Gringo Rock:

  • In These Shoes? – Kirsty MacColl
  • Cancer – Joe Jackson
  • Tropicalia – Beck
  • Mr. Jones – Talking Heads
  • Born at the Right Time – Paul Simon
  • El Macho – Mark Knopfler
  • Can’t You Hear Me Knocking – Rolling Stones
  • Living in the Past – Jethro Tull
  • Caramel – Suzanne Vega
  • And I Love Her – The Beatles
  • Spanish Caravan – The Doors
  • Samba Triste – Stan Getz
  • Tango to Evora – Loreena McKennitt
  • Spill the Wine – Eric Burdon & War
  • Do It Again – Steely Dan

One of the photographers I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years is Mike Mitchell. During a break on a photo shoot one day he mentioned that one of his very first assignments was taking pictures of The Beatles on their inaugural tour of the United States. When he showed me some of the prints, I was struck by how beautiful and unique they were.
A few years later he decided to auction off a limited edition of the photographs in an event that brought him national attention. Today, on the fiftieth anniversary of The Beatles first U.S. concert at the Washington Coliseum, he was in the news again. Congratulations Mike! You are a true artist…

Beatles_Undercover_Cover-2

We’ve developed a tradition in our family of exchanging music mixes every Christmas. I always like my mixes to have a “theme” and enjoy designing the covers almost as much as coming up with the playlists themselves. The first one I did was back in 2000 and, of course, was a collection of Beatles covers. I am including a link to a video playlist so you can hear, and in some cases see, the music.

 The Beatles Undercover:

  • She Came In Through the Bathroom Window – Joe Cocker
  • Taxman – Stevie Ray Vaughan
  • Soldier of Love – Marshall Crenshaw
  • You Can’t Do That – Harry Nilsson
  • Eleanor Rigby – Stanley Jordan
  • She’s A Woman – Jeff Beck
  • Drive My Car – Bobby McFerrin
  • Helter Skelter – The Bobs
  • Come Together – Michael Hedges
  • Blackbird – Crosby, Stills & Nash
  • Across the Universe – Fiona Apple
  • I’ve Just Seen a Face – Holly Cole
  • Dear Prudence – Siouxsie & the Banshees
  • For No One – Rickie Lee Jones
  • Because – Elliott Smith
